A Biophilic Air Cooling and Purification Installation

By CoolAnt

Inspired by natural processes, Coral combines activated charcoal, terracotta, moss, and plants to create an eco-friendly air cooling and purification system. Currently in its testing phase, Coral demonstrates the potential to remove heavy pollutants, dust particles, and toxins from the air while maintaining a soothing, nature-inspired environment.

Design Concept:
Coral’s design leverages concentric layers to achieve air cooling and purification:

The Outer Shell
The outermost layer, made up of aeroleafs, acts as a protective shield for the biophilic core. It provides shade and safeguards the internal structure from harsh sunlight and environmental elements. This layer contributes to the installation’s durability and creates a welcoming aesthetic.

The Capsule (Core):
The heart of Coral is the biophilic capsule crafted from recycled materials such as broken terracotta, discarded pots, chai and lassi kulhads, and construction debris. The capsule features:
Terracotta’s Hydrophilic Properties: This allows natural moss and vegetation to thrive on its surface, as moss grows readily on terracotta with prolonged exposure to water.
Upcycling Waste Materials: By utilizing pottery industry byproducts, construction debris, and used bricks, Coral minimizes environmental impact with a negative carbon footprint, reducing landfill waste. Activated Charcoal: Incorporated into the core materials to enhance air purification by adsorbing pollutants and toxins.
The Hollow Core: The central hollow space utilizes the Venturi Effect to create a natural airflow system, enhancing air circulation and scrubbing. Combined with ionization technology, the hollow core purifies and cools the air as it passes through, mimicking the refreshing sensation of being near a waterfall or under a tree.

Purpose and Vision:
Coral is more than an air cooling and purification installation—it is a statement on sustainable design and eco-conscious living. It invites people to gather in its shade, offering a calming space that replicates the comfort of natural environments.

Environmental Benefits:
Modern cooling systems rely on mechanical refrigerants, which contribute to environmental degradation and leave behind waste post-lifecycle. Coral counters this by:
Using eco-friendly materials. Leveraging natural processes for air cooling and purification. Promoting a circular economy by upcycling waste materials. Through this biophilic approach, Coral seeks to redefine urban spaces, fostering harmony between built environments and nature while addressing pressing issues of air quality and sustainability.
