Forest in a City

By KRVIA and Godrej Archives

This exhibition showcases a project of the KRVIA with the Pani Haq Samiti exploring the work of representation in the negotiation of access to infrastructure by poor and marginalised communities within Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Aarey Colony in Mumbai. The project was a collaboration between different institutions, communities and individual interested in the relationship between the forest and the city. They included architects, urban designers, ethnographers, anthropologists, activists, community members, cultural practitioners and archivists.

The exhibition consists of two sections:
The first is called ‘Mapping the Forest’ which explores three ways in which the forest is mapped. A virtual reality environment is created that allows one to discover the geographical context within which the hamlets lie. Within the VR environment a visitor can also walk with residents of the forest as they show them the spaces where they live.

The second space is called ‘A Forest of Claims’.
Here objects through which the forest is imagined and claimed are placed in a conversation with one another. These include policy documents, letters, religious totems, political banners, cultural artefacts, among many others.
